The week started with a joyful day playing table tennis, with 29 children from Years 5 and 6 enjoying the Cornwall School Games Table Tennis Championships on Tuesday.
The format was simple, with children split into equal groups based on their age group and the number of entrants, with everyone playing against each other. This resulted in four or five matches per player, with the winner of each group progressing to the knockout stages. Those who did not qualify still had plenty of opportunities to keep playing, supported by the fabulous volunteers running the event.
Ray W, Harry B, Christopher P and Mabel L all progressed through to the afternoon rounds, which was a fantastic achievement. Ray overcame Christopher in one quarter final, setting up a semi-final against Harry, who had also won his match at that stage.
In a high-quality and closely contested game, Harry secured the win to reach the final. Facing a more experienced opponent, Harry performed superbly, and although he narrowly missed out on the scoreboard, he was rightly proud of his achievement.
Mabel delivered some excellent performances in the morning to top her group and then took part in a tense semi-final where every game went down to the wire, and Mabel was narrowly beaten by the eventual winner of the Under-11 girls tournament.
All of the children enjoyed success at some stage, performed brilliantly and behaved impeccably throughout the day. We left with high praise from the volunteers and several offers to come in and provide coaching opportunities, which was wonderful to hear. Thank you to Mrs Issaka and Mr Frewer for supporting the children so brilliantly.
On Wednesday, our Year 2 girls’ football team stepped onto the pitch for their very first match together against Truro High School, showing confidence, energy and plenty of big smiles. They put all the skills they have been learning in their weekly football club into action, demonstrating great passing, strong defending and fantastic determination right to the final whistle.
Even more impressive was their teamwork: the girls encouraged one another, competed fairly and celebrated every effort. The highlight of the match came when our girls were so proud of themselves that they broke into a spontaneous group hug during a Truro High School goal kick. It was a perfect moment that captured their positive spirit and growing bond as a team.
It was a brilliant first game for both teams. Thank you to Truro High School for being wonderful opponents, and to all the adults who came to support both teams.
