As a key part of Truro School Prep Book Week, we were delighted to welcome a host of inspiring speakers, including James Sampson, Anna Fazackerley, Kitty Grice, Natasha Collins, Sarah and Kassia, Chris Campkin and Matt Stone. All of our visitors shared their expertise and enthusiasm, helping to spark the children’s curiosity, particularly around the fascinating world of animals.
The week began with the Pre-Prep welcoming wildlife conservationist James Sampson, who has worked with a range of charities. He spoke to the Nursery children about African animals, focusing especially on rhinos and how dehorning is used to protect them. He also engaged the group with a quiz to identify African animals. He introduced the idea of “dogs with jobs,” highlighting how specially trained dogs help deter poachers and keep rhinos safe.
Year 6 pupils then had the opportunity to learn from Anna Fazackerley, who shared her in-depth knowledge of writing newspaper articles. The session focused on crafting engaging titles and introductions to capture a reader’s attention, and, continuing the animal theme, Anna entertained the pupils with some amusing animal stories.
Later in the week, Year 4 enjoyed a talk from Kitty Grice, who spoke about her career as a zoo veterinarian. Originally from New Zealand, Kitty shared exciting highlights from her work and introduced the children to a range of zoo species, offering fascinating insights into her role.
Natasha Collins, CEO of Cornwall Wildlife Trust, visited Year 3 to discuss the charity’s vital conservation work. She spoke about endangered native species, how we can help protect them, and brought along a selection of mesmerising artefacts which really captured the children’s interest.
We are incredibly grateful to all of our speakers for taking the time to visit Truro School Prep and for inspiring the imaginations of our pupils.
