Old Truronian Glen Heather (CO09) received a warm welcome as he returned to his former Geology classroom to speak with current Sixth Form and Upper School pupils about his role at Imerys and his career in Geology. Reflecting fondly on his time at Truro School, Glen credited his A-Level Geology studies for sparking his passion for the subject, noting that GCSE Geology wasn’t available in his day, a change he now sees as a valuable addition to the curriculum.
During his visit, Glen outlined the key pathways into Geology, both applied and academic. He explored a range of career options, including natural resource exploration, mineralogy, mining, geochemistry, geophysics, hydrogeology, and environmental engineering.
Glen shared insights into his own journey, from studying at Truro School to attending the Camborne School of Mines, followed by work in Ireland, further education in Cornwall, and ultimately his current position at Imerys. He inspired pupils by emphasising that learning in the field never stops and highlighted the wealth of opportunities Cornwall offers in the sector, particularly through advancements in technology and exploration of precious metals.
Over a quarter of the audience expressed interest in pursuing Geology careers, with many Upper Sixth students having already submitted university applications to study the subject.
Glen also spoke passionately about the challenges Geology helps to address, from sustainable food production and achieving net-zero carbon emissions to responding to environmental disasters and supporting the transition to a greener economy. He highlighted how the field offers both local and global opportunities in a profession that has shaped the world for centuries and will continue to do so into the future.
A huge thank you to Glen for sharing his time and experiences, and for inspiring the next generation as they consider their future studies and career paths.
