Year 5 pupils from Truro School Prep enjoyed a rewarding outdoor learning experience at Coosebean Woods, where they worked alongside Truro City Council rangers to help coppice trees as part of their Ballerion Award.
Designed especially for our Year 5 pupils, the Ballerion Award sits alongside the curriculum and is an environmental award scheme focused on wild places. It encourages awareness of, and responsibility for, the natural environment through fun, adventure and exploration. This hands-on session in local woodland was a perfect example of the award in action.
During their visit, pupils learned how to coppice hazel, gaining an understanding of the process and the many environmental benefits it brings, including supporting woodland regeneration and wildlife habitats. After coppicing, the children cut the hazel into lengths ready to be re-purposed for a very special local project.
The wood will be used to create the spines for Truro’s much-loved Hedgehogs, which famously adorn the roundabout in Truro city centre. With each small hedgehog requiring an impressive 3,500 pieces of hazel for its spines, it was a good job our hardworking Prep pupils were on hand to help!
The day provided a valuable opportunity for pupils to connect with their local environment, contribute to the community and see how their efforts can make a tangible difference.
We are very grateful to Truro City Council and to rangers Steve and Anna for their time, expertise and support in making this memorable and meaningful experience possible.
