Game-On!

Our new Year 7 pupils kicked off their first Games session of the term, with girls taking on hockey and the boys, rugby. It is a fantastic chance for pupils to come together, allowing them to see old friends and make new ones across the year group.

Over the year, children will explore team and invasion games, participating in rugby, football, netball, and hockey as part of their games education. All pupils will have the chance to try each sport, regardless of gender.

The groups were all smiles for their first session, with clean, new boots heading out to the sports pitches and into the rain – ready to get muddy!

The first rugby session was a chance for coaches to assess current skill level and encourage pupils to listen to instructions and start to rise up to the challenge of playing at senior level. For some pupils, this would have been their first experience of rugby, whilst others are already familiar with the game, so these introductory sessions are a valuable opportunity to assess and support everyone, regardless of ability, to learn, develop, and enhance their game.

Over at hockey, the girls worked on their techniques, practising passing, and working in groups. Again, for some pupils, this might have been their first experience of hockey, so the session allowed them to work on and improve their skill set and practice teamwork and communication. After warming up, the group were excited to play an interactive and fun game of ‘zombies’.

Alongside games, Year 7 pupils will also enjoy PE lessons, including swimming, gym and badminton. The ethos of sports at Truro School is to encourage participation, teamwork, resilience and a lifelong love of physical activity, whether that is playing for fun or following high-level competitive pathways. Truro School Sport offers a player-focused approach that emphasises enjoyment, physical and mental challenge, and the development of important life skills like leadership and sportsmanship, all within a balanced academic and co-curricular environment.

In this, the Year of Confidence, it was fantastic to see our children attacking their games sessions with gusto, and we look forward to seeing them develop across the term.
