Celebrating a Year of Debating

Congratulations to all who took part in our House Debating Competition, brilliantly organised by the Lower Sixth. This marks the culmination of an outstanding year of competitive debating. From spirited Thursday lunchtime sessions to external competitions, our students have shown remarkable skill, passion, and teamwork.

The event was expertly coordinated by our Debating Society leaders: Vlad K, Sophie D, Jess B, Harry E, Bella V, Will W, Oriana M and Issy CB.

The debates followed the Oxford format, with motions revealed just 10 minutes before the start, challenging teams to think quickly, collaborate effectively, and present persuasive arguments under pressure.

First Round Motions:

• This House would prioritise the rehabilitation of criminals over punishment.
• This House believes that online learning should replace traditional classroom education.
• This House believes that parents should be responsible for their children’s actions.

The debates were of an exceptionally high standard. Wickett House emerged victorious on points, with Jacob Taylor earning the title of Outstanding Speaker for his eloquence and clarity.

A special thank you goes to Mrs Ellis, Mrs Quaife, Mrs Thurlow, Mr Williamson, and Dr Spring for their passionate participation in the Teachers’ Debate on the motion: “This House believes that schools have a moral obligation to correct societal inequalities.” Their lively exchange added a memorable and thought-provoking dimension to the event.

This competition was a joyful and inspiring occasion, made possible by the energy, organisation, and good humour of everyone involved. Well done to all!
