Boats, Beasts & Brilliant Creations

Year 4 pupils were delighted to welcome local ceramic artist Lucy Joines for a creative workshop focused on designing and making their own Hope Boats, ceramic sculptures intended to bring hope.

The session began with pupils shaping their boats entirely by hand, carefully moulding clay from scratch during a guided workshop. Once their vessels were complete, the children were encouraged to use their imagination to decide what their boat would carry. From favourite animals and pets to wildlife, imaginary characters and even SpongeBob SquarePants, each design reflected the individuality and creativity of its maker.

Lucy invited pupils to think about the story behind their boat; where it might be travelling or what it had already experienced, and each child engraved a chosen name onto their creation. The boats were then hand-painted, with pupils selecting colour schemes and adding fine details to complete their work.

We would like to thank Lucy for delivering such an engaging and inspiring workshop, allowing pupils to explore ceramics and work alongside a professional artist from our local community.

We look forward to sharing the finished boats with families once they have been fired in the kiln.
