Cape Cornwall Creative Capers

Our A-Level Art, English, Drama, and Design students set off for their first field trip of the school year to the inspiring surroundings of Cape Cornwall.

The trip focused on understanding Abstraction and Modernism and developing a sense of place. At Carne Galver Mine, amongst the ruins of mine buildings, the English and Drama students studied poetry, while the Art and Design Technology students walked to the top of Carne Galver, taking in the dramatic views. They then took part in a drawing workshop, capturing the atmosphere of the historic landscape.

Wrapping up against the elements, the group later took part in a night walk down Cot Valley to Porth Nanven to experience the unique atmosphere of the Cornish landscape in the darkness. With their sight limited, their other senses were heightened, with the crashing waves providing an unforgettable backdrop to the experience.

The following morning, the groups visited Priest’s Cove to take part in workshops exploring the Cornish landscape before heading to St Just to the Jackson Foundation Gallery. Here, students took part in a fascinating talk that further linked their experiences and learning.

The final stop on the trip was the Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens. Here, students were fortunate to experience the remarkable Aqua Oscura by James Turrell, furthering their sensory learning. Walking through the stunning gardens (in part curated by Truro School Art Teacher, Vicky Cucknall), our students were inspired to create their own sketches and musings. They also visited two sculptures created by Truro School parent Darren Hawkes.

It was an inspirational start to life in Truro School Sixth Form and a memorable and enriching experience for all involved.
