World AIMS ‘Rights for All’

Pupils across Truro School came together for a day of learning, teamwork and action as we marked this year’s World Action in Methodist Schools (AIMS) Day, centred around the theme ‘Rights for All: Having the Confidence to Care.’

With huge thanks to Rev Helen and the many staff, students and volunteers who organised the event, every pupil took part in a series of engaging workshops inspired by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) being for ALL children in ALL places.

The day was divided into three interactive zones, encouraging pupils to explore children’s rights from different perspectives and learn about how we all have a shared responsibility to protect children’s rights. In the first zone, pupils watched a video prepared by Amnesty International on why children’s rights are important to protect. That was followed by a video prepared by our Prep pupils at their World Aims Day earlier in the year, listing all 42 children’s rights (produced by our Year 9s Amelia and Sara – thank you, girls!). Pupils then worked in teams to solve escape room-style challenges, uncovering all 42 children’s rights before building a symbolic tower of rights to complete their mission.

The second zone focused on the right to nutrition and access to healthy food (articles 24 & 27). Pupils learned about food insecurity for children in Cornwall through a thought-provoking workshop led by Wendy from Truro Foodbank (part of the Trussell Trust). Then some pupils prepared food to be donated to the local refuge and food banks in the county. The others took part in a supermarket budget challenge, or ‘trolley dash’, discovering the realities and challenges of feeding a family on a limited budget. Huge thanks to Mrs Petty for preparing all the ingredients for the cooking on the day. The food prepared collaboratively by over 200 children created meals for over 80 families, which we delivered the next morning to Truro, Penryn, Newquay and St Austell.

The final zone explored the experiences of children living in conflict. This zone was planned and led by our Year 12 students, who run the World Peace Committee. Following an inspiring talk by Alex from ShelterBox, pupils either expressed their understanding through collaborative artwork highlighting the loss of education for children caused by conflict, or they took on the challenge of designing and building emergency shelters. Pupils chose a piece of slate and painted letters onto it from the alphabet of 12 countries where there are conflicts today, reminding us of the brokenness of war and how children often pay the highest price.

Thank you to our visiting speakers from Shelterbox, Truro Foodbank and Amnesty. Thanks to our Year 12s for helping to lead in each of the zones. And of course, to our 42 young performers from the Prep who starred in the film of rights!

Throughout the day, pupils demonstrated compassion, creativity and collaboration while developing a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by children both locally and around the world. World AIMS Day provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on the importance of standing up for the rights of every child and inspires our school community to continue having the confidence to care.
