Striking Gold for a Third Year Running at the Mining Games
The Cornwall School Mining Games has become a much-anticipated annual event for Year 8 pupils. After two months of dedicated training, 16 pupils travelled to King Edward Mine Museum, eager to put their well-honed skills into practice against 16 other teams representing 11 schools across Cornwall.
The two Truro School teams competed confidently in the physically demanding disciplines of ‘mucking’, hand-steeling and sawing. They also demonstrated some outstanding teamwork, care and skill in the more precise and mentally demanding events of panning, mineral processing and surveying.
As well as competing strongly, pupils reflected warmly on their experiences. Barnaby commented that “it was really nice to see my practice pay off”, and Logan enjoyed connecting the event with family “heritage and history” in the mining industry. Jenny said, “I really loved the panning and it was an amazing experience altogether”.
The pupils’ hard work was reflected in an outstanding set of results:
Mineral Processing: 1st – Truro School 1
Surveying: 1st – Truro School 1
Sawing: 2nd – Truro School 2
Overall Cornwall School Mining Games Champions 2026: Truro School 1
This marks the third consecutive year that a Truro School team has been crowned overall champions, reflecting the pupils’ sustained effort, teamwork and commitment throughout the training period and competition.
