Year 3 Step Back in Time at Kresen Kernow

Year 3 pupils visited Kresen Kernow, Cornwall’s archive centre, as part of their Prehistory topic, taking part in a workshop that shed a fascinating insight into early life in Cornwall.

The children took part in a carousel of activities, learning about the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. They examined both replica and real artefacts, including tools and everyday objects, and had the opportunity to look at items from the Roman period, such as an oil lamp and an amphora.

A highlight for many was the chance to handle a Stone Age axe head made from stone found in the Camborne area, but discovered as far away as Scotland. This helped pupils understand how materials and objects moved across regions in prehistoric times.

The workshop also introduced pupils to the work of archaeologists. Using images of human bones alongside a model skeleton, they identified which parts of the body they were examining, thereby developing their observation and reasoning skills.

Other activities included studying maps of prehistoric sites across Cornwall, matching artefacts to the correct time periods, and creating spiral-patterned artwork inspired by the past

The visit provided a valuable hands-on experience for our pupils, deepening their understanding of prehistoric life in Cornwall and building on their classroom learning at this incredible Cornish resource.

We would like to thank the staff at Kresen Kernow and our own Prep staff for delivering such an engaging and informative day.
