Our Year 6 pupils embarked on a memorable French adventure to start this half of the term, immersing themselves in the culture, history and language of Normandy during a week packed with experiences.
The journey began with an evening departure from Plymouth, travelling overnight by ferry to Roscoff. After arriving in France, the group set off to explore the charming town of Morlaix before continuing to Saint-Malo, where pupils enjoyed a fascinating visit to the aquarium. From there, they travelled on to their château accommodation, settling in for the week ahead.
Each day brought new opportunities to explore and learn. Pupils visited a traditional market in Villedieu-les-Poêles, practising their French as they browsed local produce and interacted with stallholders. A guided tour of a farm in “Carc-Méuh” was a success as pupils were delighted to sample the artisanal caramels the farm is famous for, followed by a visit to a nearby supermarket where pupils developed their confidence using their French in real-life situations.
A highlight of the week was the visit to the British Cemetery at Bayeux. This proved to be a particularly moving experience, enriched by information shared by Truro School archivist Jo Wood. Her work helped pupils to connect personally with the stories of those commemorated there, bringing a deeper understanding of the human cost of war.
The group also visited the Memorial de Caen, where pupils explored the history of the Second World War through engaging and thought-provoking exhibits. They also travelled to Mont Saint-Michel, taking in its breathtaking setting and enjoying time to explore this iconic landmark.
Back at the château, pupils took part in a range of activities, including introductory aeroballe sessions and enjoyed communal meals and a French-themed evening, celebrating the culture they had been experiencing throughout the trip.
Throughout the trip, our Year 6 pupils demonstrated confidence, curiosity and excellent behaviour, embracing every opportunity and representing the school with pride. We are incredibly proud of them and grateful to the staff who made such a rich and rewarding experience possible. Merci beaucoup!
