At Truro School Prep, we are fortunate to be able to offer an outstanding Key Stage 2 (KS2) provision that nurtures and develops the whole child. As an independent school, we are not bound to a curriculum focused on end of Key Stage results. Instead, we have implemented a structured, powerful and purposeful educational plan that strengthens our pupils academically, socially and emotionally, preparing pupils not just for exams, but for life at secondary school and beyond.
In Years 5 and 6, our pupils are able to make the most of our exceptional facilities, inspiring staff, and unique Cornish setting. We place as much value on academic challenges as we do on the creative arts, outdoor learning and co-curricular opportunities. The outcome is a curriculum that sparks curiosity and builds confidence, developing each child to reach their full potential.
At the heart of the KS2 offering are two programmes: the Year 5 Belerion Award and the Year 6 Diploma. Each is carefully structured to provide a strong foundation for learning that empowers metacognition. Pupils are encouraged to think about, not just what they learn, but how they learn. At the heart of both endeavours are the educational principles of learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together and learning to be. Together, they nurture independence, resilience and self-awareness.
By placing equal value on knowledge, skills, collaboration and personal development, we empower our pupils to become reflective and successful learners.
The Belerion Award guides much of the Year 5 curriculum at Truro School Prep and offers pupils the opportunity to learn through hands-on experiences and connect with their local and wider worlds.
With a focus on the environment, the programme encompasses outdoor education, exploration, trips, speakers and teamwork challenges. Through these opportunities, pupils develop an understanding of Cornwall’s landscape and history while building practical life skills. Whether navigating coastal paths, undertaking conservation work, or visiting local heritage sites, pupils are encouraged to take ownership of their learning.
Taken from the Ancient Greek word for Devon and Cornwall, the Belerion Award perfectly captures the principle of learning to do, with experiences that promote critical thinking, resilience and teamwork. At the same time, it supports learning to live together, as pupils work collaboratively, take responsibility for their environment, and understand the impact of their actions on their local environment and the wider world.
Importantly, the Belerion Award also nurtures learning to be. As pupils step outside their comfort zones and take on new challenges, they grow in confidence, adaptability and independence. The Award empowers them to develop self-confidence and a readiness to embrace future opportunities.
As pupils begin their final year at Truro School Prep, the Year 6 Diploma provides the opportunity to bring together the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout their time with us.
The Diploma spans academic study, creative expression, physical development and essential life skills. Pupils undertake independent projects, improve their presentation and communication skills, and engage in practical learning that prepares them for the demands of senior school and beyond.
At its heart is a focus on learning to know and the nurturing of metacognition, curiosity and a more involved understanding of subjects through independent enquiry. Alongside this, pupils develop learning to do through real-world application. For example, their Maths Diploma looks into the world of work, covering everything from employment pathways to salaries. The English section promotes public speaking and skilful debating. Practical life skills are also woven into the curriculum, with sessions on first aid and cookery included.
Equally important is the emphasis on learning to live together, fostered through collaboration, performance and shared experiences, and learning to be, as pupils reflect on their strengths and take more ownership of their personal learning journeys.
The Year 6 Diploma goes beyond a standard programme of study, providing pupils with the mindset, skills and self-confidence to thrive in the next stage of their education and beyond.
