Prep Visits to Gwennap Pit

Our Reception and Year 3 pupils recently enjoyed memorable visits to Gwennap Pit, led by Rev Helen, as part of their exploration and understanding of our Cornish surroundings and heritage.

This remarkable open-air amphitheatre and church, located just outside Redruth, was originally formed by mining subsidence in the mid-18th century. It became famously used for open-air sermons by John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who preached to thousands of Cornish miners almost 300 years ago.

Supported by knowledgeable volunteers, pupils learned about the significance of the site and its lasting connection to the local community. Bringing history to life, pupils had the opportunity to ‘meet’ John Wesley and stand where he once stood, sharing their own words of kindness and encouragement with one another.

The visit also offered time for reflection and well-being. Pupils walked the circular path of the Pit, making their way down into its centre before pausing for a moment of quiet stillness surrounded by nature. On their return, the groups filled the air with song, joyfully reciting Wesley’s well-known words about doing good, a message that clearly resonated with them.

Alongside exploring the site, our Year 3 pupils worked together to complete a quiz, testing their knowledge of Wesley, the mining community and early Methodism. Both year groups also created their own scallop shells, each one carrying an important message to take home as a reminder of their experience.

Throughout their visits, pupils showed great curiosity and kindness, representing the school beautifully. A huge thank you to the staff at Gwennap Pit, Rev Helen and the staff who made the visit so enjoyable.
