An Amazing Week of Literature and Fun for Prep Book Week

Book Week has brought with it excitement, learning and new experiences for children at Truro School Prep.

Monday brought a welcome arrival to the return of the fancy-dress-themed roundabout at drop off, with staff taking on the roles of much-loved characters from children’s poems and stories across the week.

On Tuesday, Rev Helen showcased some animal magic. Dressed as an inflatable rooster, she wowed the crowds with a spectacular show of magic tricks, supplying yet more smiles and laughter across all age groups. To finish the day, there was a pop-up book fair, with lots of wonderful books for children and parents to purchase.

On Wednesday, children arrived in their own “animal magic” costumes, ready to spend the penultimate day of Book Week in full fancy dress. This year featured an array of creative outfits, including many impressive inflatable costumes worn by pupils. Staff also joined in the fun, with Mr Ward appearing as a panda, Mrs Cameron as a hippo, and Mr Keveren as a walrus. Even Tayto, the school dog, joined us for his final week before retirement, taking part in the dress-up fun as Paddington Bear.

Wednesday also marked the start of our exciting book swap, where every child received a mystery book donated by their classmates, each with a descriptive tag on the front. Pupils took part in Buddy Reading, with our older pupils supporting younger children with their reading while exploring new books linked to our animal theme.

Throughout the week, the site looked glorious, with beautiful book-themed décor created by our dedicated FTS. With so much to explore, each day brought new discoveries and great delight.

Throughout the week, children have been painting our beloved Prep Elephant in the art studio with Mrs Ashdown. In line with our Book Week theme, he has been given an Elmer the Elephant makeover. Mrs Ashdown explained, “Painting swatches for our elephant is a great way to express creativity, and the children have passionately been using colour and adding their names to the elephant to represent themselves.” It will serve as a lasting monument to this wonderful week.

With so many events, speakers and special visitors across the week, it has been a truly incredible Book Week and one that will have created long-lasting memories for staff and pupils alike. We must issue a most special thanks to our amazing Head of English, Ms Sian Cadwallader, for her outstanding efforts in bringing this wonderful opportunity to life.

As acclaimed author Katherine Patterson once said, “It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations, something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own.” We are confident that this incredible week at Truro School Prep will have achieved this and much, much more.
