Prep Sports Round Up 06.03.26

On Sunday, 1st March, Truro Prep took a small team of committed and talented runners to the National Prep Schools’ Cross Country Championships at Malvern College. It was the first time Truro School Prep had been, and with close to 100 schools and over 600 runners in the U11-U13 races, this was always going to be a challenging yet exciting event to be a part of.

Set against the magnificent backdrop of the Malvern Hills, Mabel, Sienna, Evie and Jack were faced with a distance that they had not yet encountered. The 2800m course spiralled towards the main school, up a long incline before heading back down towards the start and finish area.

Undaunted, they performed superbly in their races with Mabel (52nd – and as a Year 5), Sienna (64th) and Evie (74th) all finishing within twenty seconds of each other and leading the School to a very creditable 6th place (out of 17 schools) in the small schools’ competition. With 207 runners in total in that race, for all three to finish in the top 35% nationally was a phenomenal achievement.

Jack was our sole representative in what turned out to be a very quick U11 boys’ race. Again, he ran brilliantly, picking off runners as he completed the two-lap course to finish in 89th position and a place in the top 45% nationally. Again, a magnificent performance when one considers he was running as a Year 5.

At the end of the day, there were smiles and happiness, especially with their goody bags! Many thanks to the parents for being so accommodating in allowing us to represent Truro Prep School on a national scale, and hopefully we get the chance to go along next year.

On Tuesday, following on from last Wednesday’s qualifiers, 17 children from Years 4, 5 & 6 travelled to Camborne Science and International Academy for the Peninsula School Sports Partnership Finals. The format was the same; races for Year 4, 5 and 6 girls and boys.

Nola led the charge with a resounding victory in the Year 4 girls’ race, with Grace and Winnie following in 16th and 44th place, respectively. They set the standard for the rest of the team to follow. Aflie and Josh followed suit in the next race, with Alfie bringing home another medal and Josh finishing inside the top 10.  We couldn’t have made a better start!

The Year 5s didn’t disappoint either with Mabel (3rd), Isabella (7th), Jack (2nd), Rafe (4th), Sandy (5th),  Rocco (7th), James (13th), Henry (20th) and Edward (24th) representing Truro Prep with aplomb. All of our runners should be very proud of the way that they attacked the course.

The force of nature that is Sienna stormed through the Year 6 girls’ race to come home in 1st place, and Rohan (24th) and Samuel (33rd) ran brilliantly to complete the day’s events and a very successful time in the sun for Truro Prep School.

Thanks as always to Mr Frewer and Miss Chapman for providing support and to the many parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters who came along too.

Also over the weekend, Reuben, Millie H, Alfie H, Mila M and Nola M took part in the Surf Life Saving National Championships in Cardiff International pool, with stunning performances on display from all involved. Our pupils took part in three individual events: the manakin tow, flipper race, and rescue board race. There were also paired events (rescues) and relays.

Well done to all of the competitors for strong performances in a highly competitive field, with Millie placing 7th overall and medals from Alfie (bronze), Mila (silver and silver) and Nola (silver and silver).
