Pride, music and a true sense of Cornish spirit as our school celebrate St Piran’s Day.
Over at the Prep, the day began with a special assembly led by Mr Morse, setting a joyful tone for the celebrations. Our pupils’ voices rang out as they sang three much-loved Cornish songs: Cornwall My Home, written by the late Cornish bard Harry Glasson; the rousing anthem Trelawny, with lyrics by Robert Stephen Hawker; and Song for Cornwall, also composed by Harry Glasson. It was a beautiful and moving start to the day and a wonderful celebration of Cornwall.
Pupils also learnt about the history of St Piran, the patron saint of Cornwall. They explored the story of how he travelled from Ireland and discovered tin in Cornwall, and why the iconic black and white St Piran’s flag remains such a powerful symbol of Cornish identity today.
After a pasty lunch for all, the celebrations continued into the afternoon with a range of creative and engaging activities in Truro School Pre-Prep. Our Nursery pupils, inspired by local artist Tabby Booth, created vibrant animal artwork, using their fingers to draw animal shapes in paint before printing paper on top, much to their delight.
Pupils also made jam pasties, carefully practising their crimping skills and taking great pride in their creations, and looked at photographs of local places, sharing how these familiar landscapes make them feel. They also began learning how to say “hello” in Cornish and listened to Cornish songs, further immersing themselves in the language and culture of our county.
Our Senior musicians and staff joined the 40th St Piran’s parade in Truro, whilst the Chapel has been filled with joyful singing of Cornish songs.
It was a day filled with community spirit, creativity and celebration and was a fitting tribute to St Piran and to the rich heritage that makes Cornwall so special to us all.
