With a lifelong love of animals and an impressive academic record to match, Year 13 student Alice is now working towards her goal of studying Veterinary Science at Bristol after completing her A-Levels at Truro School.
Currently working towards predicted grades of three A*s in Chemistry, Biology and Geology, and having already achieved Further Mathematics in Year 12, Alice has her sights firmly set on Bristol University. She has received an offer for the course alongside several other excellent options and is now focused on her final exams as she works towards securing her place.
The five-year Veterinary Science programme would see Alice spend three years studying in Bristol, followed by a further two years completing practical training. Having known from an early age that veterinary medicine was her dream career, Alice has worked with determination and focus towards this goal. She carefully selected science subjects at GCSE and continued this focus into her A-Levels after researching the entry requirements for her first-choice university, where strong science grades are essential.
Alongside her studies, Alice has completed two veterinary work placements at Head and Head Vets in Helston and Lamorna House Veterinary Practice in Camborne. She has also volunteered at Paradise Park in Hayle, where she has been fortunate to spend time with the weekly visiting vet. During this experience, Alice was able to observe procedures, gain insight into post-mortems and preventative medicine, and learn more about exotic animals. This, combined with additional experience on farms involving lambing and milking, has fuelled her enthusiasm to continue learning and fully embrace the opportunities at Bristol University before committing to a specialist field.
Reflecting on her time in the Sixth Form, Alice said, “I have really enjoyed my time here. Miss Havis has offered exceptional support with my university applications and personal statement. Being in the Sixth Form has given me confidence, and I’ve had opportunities such as becoming a Chemistry Prefect, running clinics for younger year groups, and working as an ACHE mentor. I chose to stay here for my A-Levels because of the supportive environment. Veterinary Science is a competitive option, and having teachers who really know me, and have time to dedicate to every student, has helped tremendously, especially when I’ve needed extra support.”
Alice completed extensive personal research before choosing her options in Year 11, ensuring she selected subjects that would strengthen her university application and support her long-term ambitions.
We wish Alice every success in her upcoming exams and look forward to seeing her take the next exciting steps towards a future career in veterinary medicine.
