Mr Ward, Head of Sport at Truro School Prep, put some of our Year 2 pupils through their hockey paces in a fun, fast-paced and engaging lesson.
At Truro School Prep, the teaching of hockey begins in Year 1, when pupils are introduced to the sport through unihoc, a fun, simplified, game-based version that helps our youngest players feel confident holding a stick and guiding the ball across the floor. These early lessons focus on exploration, movement, and enjoyment, laying the foundation for skills they’ll continue to build throughout their time at the school.
As pupils move through the Prep, lessons become more structured and skill-focused, gradually introducing controlled dribbling and accurate passing, awareness of defensive positions and how to hold space, matches that build confidence and decision-making, team tactics and on-pitch communication skills.
Every session is designed so that all children can take part, make progress, and discover the excitement of the game. Hockey is an ideal sport for developing the core aims of the primary curriculum. Through regular play, pupils naturally strengthen agility, balance, and coordination, learn the value of teamwork and clear communication, develop strategic thinking and quick decision-making and build resilience, sportsmanship, and a sense of fair play.
