Ranked in the Top 10% Nationally for A-Level Progress

Truro School, one of the leading independent schools in Cornwall, is delighted to share that it has once again been ranked within the top 10% nationally for A-Level progress, according to the latest ALPS* (A-Level Performance System) scores.

This outstanding achievement highlights Truro School’s position as one of the best-performing schools in the South West and reflects the exceptional progress and value-added teaching delivered across every subject area.

Top in Cornwall and Among the UK’s Best

This national recognition follows another year of excellent GCSE and A-Level results, with both our girls and boys once again achieving top results in Cornwall and ranking highly across the UK.

At Truro School, academic excellence is supported by innovative teaching, smaller class sizes, and a nationally award-winning co-curricular programme, which together create a well-rounded, high-achieving learning environment. We are also proud to be recognised as one of the top schools in the UK for Performing Arts, alongside our consistent record for outstanding academic results.

Smaller-than-average class sizes, regular exam clinics, individual learning reviews, and a strong culture of support enable every pupil to thrive and achieve their full potential.

“The teachers at Truro School go above and beyond. They genuinely care about each pupil’s progress and wellbeing. Since joining the school, our daughter has rediscovered her confidence and is excelling academically.” Truro School Parent

Why Truro School’s Co-Educational Approach Works

Families often ask us two key questions when exploring independent schools in Cornwall:

  1. Do girls achieve better in all-girls schools?
  2. Why don’t independent schools appear in the GCSE league tables?

In response to the first question, ‘Do girls achieve better in all-girls schools?’, our answer is no; there is no substantial evidence to suggest that girls achieve better in single-sex independent schools than in co-educational ones.

At Truro School, our experience shows that girls thrive academically, socially, and personally in a co-educational environment. Learning alongside boys helps to develop confidence, collaboration skills, and emotional intelligence, essential for success at university, in the workplace, and in life.

Our results also speak for themselves: Truro School girls consistently outperform local single-sex schools academically, also benefiting from the broader perspective and preparation that a balanced, co-educational setting provides.

Why Independent Schools Don’t Always Appear in GCSE League Tables

Many independent schools, including Truro School, offer a combination of GCSEs and IGCSEs (International GCSEs). While both qualifications are of equal academic standard and are fully recognised by universities, the UK Government’s Department for Education (DfE) does not include IGCSE results in official school performance tables.

This is because IGCSEs are assessed by international exam boards such as Cambridge International and Edexcel International, which fall outside the reformed GCSE framework used in state schools.

As a result, even when an independent school achieves exceptional results, its performance may not appear accurately in national league tables.

Independent schools continue to offer IGCSEs because they provide rigour, flexibility, and depth, preparing students for A-Level success and university-level study.

*ALPS measures how much progress students make. Achieving a top 10% ranking demonstrates that Truro School pupils consistently exceed expectations and make exceptional academic progress.
