Our new Year 6 pupils took on an epic six-mile circular walk around St Agnes, with confidence in their step and camaraderie in the air.
These trips are a fantastic opportunity for our new classes to form close bonds as they navigate our beautiful Cornish coastline. Alongside learning about our local history and environment, these walks provide a physical challenge and help to develop soft skills including communication, teamwork and perseverance.
Starting at Chapel Porth, the pupils climbed steadily up to The Beacon. From this blustery vantage point, the youngsters took in panoramic views stretching to Carne Brea and RAF Portreath. Here, the children swapped tales of local legends like Bolster and Saint Agnes, the village’s namesake.
Their descent brought them onto a rugged path, before the National Coastwatch lookout came into view. Here, volunteers warmly welcomed the group and shared insights into the vital role of the National Coastwatch Institution team, who act as guardians of the coastline, monitoring walkers, tracking vessels, and liaising with the Coastguard during emergencies.
A brief pause at the station revealed a nearby World War II anti-aircraft gun emplacement, prompting reflections on how the landscape would have looked in the 1940s, dotted with military barracks and huts.
The walk also gave the pupils the chance to explore some of our rich Cornish mining heritage and think about the lives of the miners at Wheal Coates. The group dropped stones down the mine shaft, counting how long they took to reach the bottom. Some impressive maths enabled them to calculate the depth of the shaft.
Returning to Chapel Porth, the group rewarded their efforts with ice creams from the National Trust Café. Even a sudden downpour couldn’t take away the delight in this well-deserved treat.
A big thank you to all of the staff who helped on the trip and to our Year 6 pupils, who represented Truro School Prep with enthusiasm throughout the day.
