Rotary Youth Speaks Regional Rounds

On Sunday, pupils Buzz , Christian and Arlo competed in the regional round of the Rotary Youth Speaks competition in Newton Abbot. They delivered arguments for and against the motion ‘Now is the time to abolish the monarchy’ – a topic which had become unexpectedly topical since beginning to write their speeches!

Ms Selvey, Head of English, said:

“They were witty, incisive and fully persuasive and finished the day as runners up to a Y13 team, in a really impressive field of five teams from Cornwall and Devon. They will undoubtedly go on to great things in Sixth Form! I also wanted to commend their initiative and organisational skills: the debate being scheduled in half term, the boys collaborated remotely to update their speeches, and planned their own transport to the venue, navigating trains, rail-replacement buses and taxis to arrive – all done with good humour and a sense of fun”.
