Year 5 Go Viking!

Year 5 are researching the Vikings in their humanities lessons this half-term to discover whether they were really as vicious as we have been led to believe. Were they ruthless raiders or actually skilled traders? Have they been misrepresented by the Anglo-Saxons, who were afraid of these tough warriors?

In class, Year 5 have been examining their important raid on Lindisfarne in AD793. They have looked at reports written from both the Viking and Anglo-Saxon points of view to establish the truth about what really happened. They have developed their understanding further by watching BBC videos about the topic, before taking part in debates arguing the point of an Anglo-Saxon or a Viking.

Current homework tasks are linked closely to the classwork, and include researching, designing and creating designs of Viking shields. As an Eco-School, sustainability has been top of their list when considering materials for their shields. Our Year 5 children have stayed ‘green’ by making sound design choices, such as reusing a wooden pallet, recycling cardboard packaging, yoghurt pots, curtain hooks, milk bottle lids, and even a few plastic milk bottle containers as shield handles.

Well done to all of our pupils for your confident, creative and curious start to this topic.
