Year 12 Geographers enjoyed a highly successful field trip to Somerset, where they combined hands-on coastal investigation with advanced data analysis skills, bringing their classroom learning vividly to life.
Following their arrival, students were quickly immersed in fieldwork after an introductory session at the Field Study Centre in Nettlecombe. One of the key highlights of the trip was their visit to Minehead Beach, where they investigated the coastal management strategies used to protect the town from erosion and flooding.
Working along the coastline, students examined a range of defences, including rock armour, developing their understanding of how these structures dissipate wave energy. They also applied Hudon’s Formula, a method used by coastal engineers to determine the appropriate size and type of rock armour for effective shoreline protection. This practical application allowed students to directly connect their theoretical knowledge to real-world engineering challenges.
Back at Nettlecombe Field Study Centre, the group continued their studies with sessions focused on data analysis. Using ArcGIS, students processed and presented the data they had collected in the field, gaining valuable experience with industry-standard geographical tools and techniques.
Throughout the trip, students demonstrated excellent engagement, curiosity, and collaboration, making the most of the opportunity to deepen their understanding of both physical geography and geospatial analysis.
The field trip has provided an invaluable experience, equipping students with practical skills and insights that will support their ongoing studies and future geographical investigations.
A huge thank you to Mrs Wormald and the Geography Department for organising such a wonderful trip!
