Wyl Menmuir Inspires Young Storytellers

A key insight from the recent workshop led by Booker Prize nominee Wyl Menmuir was the powerful idea that ‘the most compelling stories are born from truly listening’. During his visit to the school this week, Wyl captivated pupils with his creative writing and storytelling sessions, encouraging them to explore their own voices.

Wyl began his career as a novelist. He discovered a deeper passion in listening to others’ stories, especially those rooted in their relationships with their landscape and the sea. This shift in focus sparked the creation of his latest trilogy, which explores how individuals connect with their environments in meaningful and personal ways.

This half-term, 2nd Year pupils discussed excerpts from his acclaimed book The Draw of the Sea and were inspired to craft their own nature-based narratives with awards being given for the most captivating pieces of writing.

A huge congratulations to 2nd Year Wyl Menmuir Writing Competition finalists Grace, Zavvy, Joseph, and Will and the overall winner Felicity; these students all received a signed and dedicated copy of The Draw of the Sea. Menmuir was full of praise for the subtle, sensitive, and nuanced explorations of the Cornish coast.
