In Humanities, our Year 4 pupils have been answering the question, ‘How does the Earth shake, rattle and roll?’
To understand the make-up of the Earth, pupils got hands-on and created models out of plasticine to help them better understand what happens beneath our feet. The Earth is composed of four main layers, the crust, mantle, outer and inner core, each with distinct chemical and physical properties.
They then used Oreo biscuits to explore the three different types of earthquakes and to learn about tectonic plates. Pupils removed the top layer of the biscuit and broke it into pieces to represent tectonic plates. The creamy filling represents the soft layer that the plates move around on. Pupils were able to explore how plates can move apart, push together or slide past each other.
Later in the term, we are looking forward to welcoming a volcanologist into Truro School Prep to further deepen our knowledge and understanding of this fascinating topic.
