Wednesday’s Year 6 debate at Truro School served up a lively and thought-provoking discussion on the motion: “Fast food does more harm than good.” What followed was a truly sizzling exchange of ideas, with both sides proving they were anything but half-baked.
Arguing for the motion, Gabriel, Will and Rupert dished out a persuasive case, highlighting the negative impacts of convenience food on health, the environment and even mental well-being. Their arguments were well-seasoned and carefully prepared, giving the audience plenty to chew on.
However, the opposition team of Endelyn, Audrey and Saffron rose to the challenge with confidence and flair, flipping the argument on its head. They emphasised the benefits of fast food, from job creation to affordability and accessibility, ultimately delivering a performance that the audience clearly found hard to resist.
Despite the proposers’ strong start, it was the opposition who took the final bite, defeating the motion with a commanding result.
Credit must go to all six debaters for their enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions. Special mention should also go to Sienna, who chaired proceedings with impressive authority and good humour, keeping everything running smoothly, and to Hennie, who ensured timings were spot on.
The debate covered a wide range of important topics, from environmental concerns to mental health, and it was fantastic to see the audience so engaged throughout. As the discussion gathered momentum, it was clear this was no drive-through debate, but a full intellectual feast.
Well done to everyone involved for an event that was both enriching and thoroughly enjoyable.
