Audiences were treated to a delightful theatrical experience this week with Oscar Wilde’s farcical comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest, presented as a Sixth Form Production under the direction of Sixth Former, Celia.
This captivating play, led by a stellar cast, showcased the lives of two charming yet mischievous bachelors, portrayed by Arlo as Jack and Jacob as the idle card Algernon, as they navigated the timeless classic of mistaken identities, outrageous characters, and a whirlwind of romance. Whilst delivering a memorable stack of much-loved Oscar Wilde ‘one liners’.
Some excellent acting saw Jasmine portray the fickle and pretentious Gwendoline, while Bella embodied the young, naive and slightly obsessive Cecily.
The audience was thrilled to see some well-known staff members also taking to the stage, with Ms Egar playing the outrageously snobbish Lady Augusta Bracknell and both Mrs Vaughan and Mr Oldfield revelling in their characterisation of Miss Prism and Rev Dr. Chasuble.
The actors enjoyed a packed theatre on both nights with both cast and crew delivering all that was promised and more. When asked about directing the play, Celia said “ It was slightly terrifying directing some incredible actors who have taught me and directed me before, but everyone was incredibly responsive and I couldn’t have wished for a better cast.”
One parent who attended said she thought it was one of the best renditions of this play that she had seen in a long while and commended Celia’s skill.
A special mention must also go to the musicians, whose contribution brought an added layer to the production. Under the musical direction of Oriana, the music was a triumph in its own right, thanks to Oriana, Philip, Isaac, Molly and James. A huge thank you also to Matilda, Millie, Sophia, and the tech team led by Hugo.
