Students enjoyed two thought-provoking lunchtime events exploring very different perspectives on economics and careers.
First, students from Year 9 and above attended a careers talk from Elizabeth Stansfield of Handelsbanken. The session introduced them to the wide range of opportunities within the finance industry, from banking and investments to wealth management. Elizabeth spoke about the different routes into the sector and the skills needed to succeed, offering practical insight for students considering future careers in finance.
Later in the day, pupils had the opportunity to hear from Molly Scott Cato, a British Green politician, economist and former Member of the European Parliament for South West England. Molly shared her expertise on Green Economics, encouraging students to think about how economic systems can support both people and the planet.
Her talk explored ideas such as living comfortably within planetary limits, placing greater emphasis on equality once resources are finite, and focusing on quality of life rather than simply increasing economic output. Students were introduced to the concept of political economy and invited to consider how sustainability and fairness can shape future economic thinking.
Together, the two events offered pupils valuable insight into the diverse ways economics can shape careers, society and the future of our planet.
