Sunshine and Sportsmanship at Prep Sports Day

Prep’s Sports Day got underway on Thursday in glorious sunshine. Pupils, staff and families gathered in the school field for the event, with individual and team events running throughout the day.

Events included the long jump, high jump and vortex throw, with track events and a tug of war completing the day.

There were some stunning performances, with new school records made. But it was most impressive to see the sporting spirit, determination and compassion shown by our pupils as they took part and cheered their peers on.

Mrs Luxton shared her thoughts on the day, summing up the event perfectly.

“Do you know what? I went home today with a big smile on my face. I think this just might have been the best Sports Day yet.

Why? It is quite simple, really.

‘Victory is in having done your best. If you’ve done your best, you’ve already won.’ (Billy Bowerman)

You may not agree with this statement because often someone does their best and doesn’t win. But if you consider your children – who each competed in eight track and field events today – they all experienced success by doing their very best.

If you were at the high jump today, you might have heard the following conversations between the children. Their comments would have made you smile: ‘I didn’t know that I could jump that!’, ‘I have never done that before!’ and ‘I can do this!’

Among my favourite moments of the day was Luca in Year 5, who confided that he had done his very best today. Do you know what? He had a big smile on his face too.”

Well done to all of the pupils who tried their best today.
