STEAM Day Sparks Joy at Prep

The Truro School Prep team were delighted to welcome over 70 pupils from local primary schools to this year’s STEAM Discovery Day. Building on the success of previous years, the event continued to spark curiosity, creativity and collaboration through an exciting programme of hands-on activities.

Pupils took part in a wide range of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) sessions led by members of the Prep staff. Alongside much-loved favourites, we were thrilled to expand the offering this year with the introduction of Sparkling Circuits. This science workshop challenged pupils to explore electrical circuits in an engaging and accessible way.

Creativity and sustainability were also front and centre in the DT room, where Matt Nott from One Blue Eye joined Mrs Knight. Together, they guided pupils in transforming old plastic sweet tubs into templates for robot faces and bodies. This not only gave the robots an eco-boost but also encouraged pupils to think differently about plastic waste and the exciting possibilities of repurposing materials to create something new and wonderful.

Speaking at the event, Head of Truro Prep, Mr Rob Morse, highlighted the importance of nurturing STEAM skills from an early age.

“The world our children will inherit will be significantly more exciting and more challenging than our own. Technological advances will shape future careers and opportunities, and it will be the ability to navigate technology alongside creativity, resilience and collaboration that gives young people a head start. This is where STEAM really comes into its own.”

He also reflected on the value of including the arts alongside science and technology, noting that STEAM encourages pupils to use both the logical and creative sides of the brain, particularly when working together to solve problems.

The event was a fun, vibrant and rewarding experience, and it was a pleasure to see the communication, cooperation and sheer delight on display as pupils grew in confidence and skill throughout the sessions.

We would like to thank all the pupils who joined us for this year’s STEAM Discovery Day and helped make it such a memorable occasion.

For those interested in learning more about how STEAM subjects are woven into everyday life at Truro School Prep, we warmly invite you to join us at our next Open Morning on Saturday, 7 March, from 10am to 12pm. Further details and registration information can be found via the link below.
