The Junior Play, Arabian Nights, adapted by Dominic Cooke, was an imaginative culmination of a term’s work during five weeks of Wednesday Afternoon Activities (WAAs) for pupils in Years 7 and 8.
Drawing on the rich tapestry of Middle Eastern folklore, the production followed the well-known tale of Scheherazade, who tells a series of captivating stories to the Sultan to save her life. While the play was light-hearted and full of humour, it also carried a deeper message about the power of storytelling to build understanding, empathy and human connection.
The pupils delivered confident and engaging performances, embracing a physical theatre style that really brought the production to life. Using their bodies, sounds and movement, the cast skilfully created settings, props and a wide range of characters, transforming the stage into a vivid and ever-changing world without the need for traditional scenery.
The production was a testament to the pupils’ creativity, teamwork and dedication, and a wonderful example of what can be achieved in a short space of time. It was also evident how well the cast had worked together, a testament to the power of Truro School’s WAA programme in creating cross-year group friendships from shared passions and hobbies.
Thank you to all the pupils involved, as well as the families and friends who came to support the performance. Special thanks go to Directors Mrs Hood and Mrs Sanderson, and to the behind-the-scenes team of Jasper, Lewis, Amelie and Hugo. Their hard work ensured the show’s success.
