Sixth Formers Hopeful for Geological Society Award

A group of Truro School Sixth Form students are taking part in ‘The Schools Geology Challenge’, a national competition that encourages students to explore their passion for geology, discover how geoscience shapes our everyday lives, and develop their teamwork and presentation skills.

The team is competing for the top prize: the prestigious Schools Geology Challenge Trophy, £500 to support geoscience education at the school, and a year’s Student Membership with the Geological Society.

Since September, students have dedicated one lunchtime each week to preparing for the challenge, strengthening their leadership, public speaking, organisation, teamwork and time management skills. The competition began with three teams and 18 students, many of whom are currently studying A-Level Geology or previously studied GCSE Geology at Truro School. Following a video submission, the field has been narrowed to one outstanding team who have secured a place in the final. The final will take place at Burlington House in London, home of the Geological Society, on 19 March.

After presenting a three-minute video to the judges, the team received the following feedback:

“Really interesting topic that is very complex, but you explained this extremely well for your non-expert audience. Your diagrams and explanations were fantastic, and you took the time to clarify key terms so your audience could fully understand.”

We wish the team the very best of luck as they prepare for the final in the coming weeks.
