Sixth Formers Find Design Inspiration in London

A group of sixth formers have recently returned from a fascinating three-day visit to London, immersing themselves in a wealth of design inspiration. They were blessed with beautiful weather, enabling them to enjoy London at its autumnal best.

The trip included many highlights, starting with a visit to the Olympic Park. Here, students could sketch and study the inspirational Zaha Hadid-designed Aquatic Centre and the impressive Velodrome. They then stepped back in time and explored the pyramids of Egypt through the “Horizons of Khufu VR experience.”

The following morning, the group travelled from Canary Wharf to central London by river taxi where they visited MAP, Universal, MadeThought –  a modern, cross-disciplinary design studio. MAP emerged from the collaboration of three separate businesses and now works with high-profile clients on large projects. Students toured the facilities, explored their wonderful materials library, and took part in a lively Q&A session with the team there. From here, they walked past St Pauls and then by River Boat to Battersea Power Station.

The students then walked to the V&A Museum to briefly explore modern and 21st-century design in a quick tour though history with a focus on styles, shapes, and materials. The day concluded with some leisure time at Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland. They concluded the visit with a trip to Brunel University’s product Design course and a tour of the facilities.

Throughout the trip, pupils documented their research and ideas in their sketchbooks, which they brought back to school to continue their work. The experience was invaluable, particularly as it will aid them in their upcoming Summer Term, when they are tasked with designing a ‘pavilion’. A big thank you to Mr Baker for organising this broad and enriching visit and to the DT team for their enthusiasm in making this a fabulous learning experience for all.
