Showcase of Skill: Leiths Canapé Evening

The inviting shimmer of warm lights and enticing aromas greeted family and friends at our highly anticipated Leiths Canapé Evening. Inside, gentle piano melodies set the tone as guests arrived, welcomed by the promise of an unforgettable culinary experience.

In the weeks leading up to this much-anticipated event, our talented Leiths students dedicated themselves to perfecting the art of creating stunning canapés. Last night, their hard work and passion came to fruition in an extraordinary event.

The calm, focused energy in the kitchen reflected the students’ growing confidence and expertise. Guests savoured plate after plate of beautifully crafted canapés, proudly prepared and served by the students themselves. The selection showcased an impressive array of both savoury and sweet delights.

During the evening, Harry, our Deputy Head Boy and a Leiths student, addressed our guests. He said, “If I had been told at the start of Lower Sixth that I had to cook canapés for over 60 people, I might have just flatly refused. I could barely dice an onion, let alone make a caramel mousse and many other components en masse and under time pressure! I think the same could be said for a lot of us with minimal culinary experience leading into the course. As we progressed through, we gradually undertook more complex cooks, with multiple recipes and tricky techniques.”

He continued, “I intend to use my skills in a job as a chef in a ski resort during my gap year, while others are already putting theirs to use in professional kitchens around Cornwall and even further afield.”

This event wasn’t just about showcasing and celebrating our students’ culinary talent; it was also a chance to support St Petrocs, the Cornwall-based charity that helps people experiencing homelessness. As Christmas approaches, the challenges faced by those without a safe and warm place to call home become even more pressing. St Petrocs provides a vital lifeline, offering safe and welcoming spaces where individuals can feel secure, supported, and treated with dignity. Their work includes employment workshops, emergency accommodation, and ongoing support that continues long after someone achieves financial independence. This Christmas, St Petrocs will make a meaningful difference to countless lives, and we extend our sincere thanks to everyone who donated to support their invaluable work.

A huge congratulations to our Leiths students for their incredible dedication and the outstanding canapés that delighted everyone!
