Sixth Form students have been taking part in self-defence classes led by external tutor and karate specialist Steve Drage.
Over the course of eight weeks, 20 students have followed a structured programme of self-defence techniques, culminating in a final practical session focused on defending against a knife attack.
The course is designed to equip students with the skills and awareness needed to protect themselves in real-world situations. Throughout the programme, Steve has consistently emphasised that “your own safety is paramount.”
Working in small groups, students have developed techniques including maintaining distance, avoidance strategies, breaking free from wrist grabs, escapes and strikes, responding to strangles and hook punches, defending against clothing grabs, and using kicks and knees effectively. They have also practised safe falling, rolling, and escape methods. Each session has combined hands-on practical learning with a question-and-answer discussion.
