Scholars’ Away Days

This term the Academic Scholars in Lower and Middle School have been involved in their end of year ‘Away Days’. These have provided them with opportunities to engage with ideas beyond the academic curriculum as well as providing them with opportunities for collaboration.

This week, the Lower School Academic Scholars have been delivering their presentations to members of the Senior Leadership Team. These presentations have been inspired by their day at the Royal Cornwall Museum and workshop with Head of Lower School Mrs Thurlow. It has been wonderful watching them confidently share their independent research on topics as wide-ranging as Egyptian mummies to the Rosetta Stone.

On Wednesday, the Middle School Academic Scholars put their problem-solving skills to the test as we headed down to Engima Escape Rooms. Pupils worked collaboratively in teams to defuse a ‘bomb’ and crack the code to ‘join’ Bletchley Park. This was then followed by an inspiring session with Mr Picton, building upon the theme of collaboration and problem-solving by looking at the work of CERN. Our students then created their own cloud chambers using solid CO2 and were able to observe cosmic ray muons and neutrinos. Some even introduced radioactive materials into their cloud chambers to observe the effect.
