Year 6 pupils have shown great confidence in learning the skills of debating, forming teams under a new initiative led by Mr Silk. The process has allowed them to express thoughts and feelings, whilst respecting the opinions of others. The assembly showed courage and compassion from all involved, with pupils discussing the topic “Should school uniforms be compulsory?”
With Gabriel taking on the position of chairman, and Endolyn as the timekeeper, Harvey, Harry and Henny fought for uniforms to stay compulsory. They highlighted the argument that uniforms help to stamp out bullying, show pride in your school and appearance, and make you feel part of a community. Harvey reminded all present of Mr Morse’s motto, “Look smart, think smart”.
Fjola, Barney and Alexia fought for the uniform to be abolished on the basis it allows an expression of individuality, is a lower cost for parents, and adds an element of comfort.
After expressing their arguments, the audience were invited to ask questions, addressing Gabriel as Mr Chairman. Pupils had pre-prepared their statements, with Sienna, Greta, Grace, Theo, Bert, Otto, Freya, Kai, Hugo and Edward putting forward their thoughts politely and respectfully. Mr Silk, Mrs Luxton and Mrs Morse were also invited to share their thoughts before it went to a public vote, with a the motion to abolish school uniform carried by 64 votes to 49.
Despite not being able to carry the motion into real-life practice, Mr Silk remarked that he was, “impressed by everyone and their use of persuasion skills, preparation, listening skills, and very importantly, giving both teams a chance to show their side of the argument respectfully.” He also congratulated everyone on their teamwork throughout the process and invited other Year 6 pupils to take part in the debate teams next term.
