There was excitement in Truro School Pre-Prep this week as the children gathered for a special assembly with School Chaplain, Rev Helen, to learn all about the Lunar New Year.
Rev Helen shared some of the rich traditions and symbolism behind the celebrations. The children discovered that red, a key colour of the festival, symbolises good luck, happiness and protection, while yellow represents prosperity, hope and new beginnings. They were fascinated to learn how these bright colours are used in decorations, clothing and gifts to bring blessings for the year ahead.
A highlight of the assembly was learning about the tradition of red envelopes, which are often given as gifts to share good fortune. Inspired by this custom, every child received their own “envelope of hope” to create. Inside, they placed a picture of a horse, this year’s zodiac and a symbol of strength, energy and success. They also included a yellow heart, on which they wrote their own hopes and wishes for the coming year.
The joyful and thoughtful assembly was a wonderful way for the children to explore different cultures and reflect on their own aspirations.
Huge thanks to Rev Helen for bringing such joy to the Pre-Prep this week and for making the Lunar New Year celebrations so memorable for all.
