On Wednesday, 11 December, proud families gathered in the Chapel for a memorable Poetry in Performance evening, celebrating a term of creativity, confidence, and the development of literary and dramatic talent. Every Year 7 pupil took to the stage, alongside pupils from Years 8 and 9, to deliver a stunning festive showcase of poetry that highlighted their hard work and growing self-assurance as performers.
The evening featured a wonderful mix of individual recitals and group pieces. From thoughtful original compositions to powerful readings of well-known works, pupils impressed with their clarity, charisma and expressive delivery. It was inspiring to see each young performer embrace the challenge of presenting to a full audience, demonstrating skills they have been refining throughout the term.
This event marks the culmination of work in poetry and performance across English and Drama, which introduces pupils from Year 7 to the foundational elements of poetic study. Throughout the term, pupils have explored key poetic devices, analysed the work of established poets, and developed their own creative and analytical writing. They have learned how to deconstruct poems by examining stanzas, rhyme schemes, tone, and the role of the speaker, skills that will support their progression as they move towards GCSE.
Performance, too, plays a vital role in their study. Pupils have learned how connecting with an audience can deepen the impact of a poem, and how posture, body language, and eye contact can help convey emotion. They have experimented with pitch and pace to enhance tone and meaning, and discovered practical techniques, from deep breathing to simply smiling, that can build confidence.
Well done to all of our pupils for a remarkable evening of poetry; their courage and creativity shone through, making for a truly uplifting celebration of their achievements. Thanks to Mrs Sanderson, Mrs Selvey and all the staff and families who supported pupils throughout.
