The Chapel was the setting for an outstanding display of Truro School’s musical talent as the Junior House Music Finals got underway. The event showcased pupils from Years 7–9 representing the four houses, School, Wickett, Vinter, and Smith, in a hotly contested competition for much-coveted house points.
The House Music Competition is one of several exciting events that span music, sport and general knowledge, and help to foster friendly rivalry, strengthen peer relationships, and create a sense of school pride.
With guest adjudicator Helen Logan, Head of Music at Penair School, on hand to judge, the evening showcased an impressive array of performances from our young musicians. Pupils demonstrated confidence and skill across a wide range of instruments, including drums, saxophone, piano, recorder, cornet, trombone, harp, guitar, violin, and xylophone, highlighting the breadth of musical opportunities available within the school.
Among the standout moments were a fantastic guitar performance of Take Me Away by Lash from Year 7 pupil Jas, and a simply stunning violin solo of Por Una Cabeza by Carlos Gardel from Year 8 pupil Sufi. Both pupils were later highlighted by the adjudicator as “stars of the future”.
While judging took place, the Junior Strings ensemble entertained the audience with a series of lively and polished pieces.
In her closing remarks, Helen Logan praised the pupils’ “musicality and musicianship,” commending the high standard achieved by performers across all year groups and noting the confidence and enjoyment that shone through every performance.
The overall prizes were awarded as follows:
Runner Up (Solo): Thomas A (Wickett), for his outstanding xylophone performance of On the Track by Jack Simpson
Winner (Solo): Joseph T (School), for his moving rendition of In the Mists by Leoš Janáček
Ensemble Prize: Philharmonia
A huge thank you goes to the Music Department, visiting teachers, our adjudicator Helen Logan, and of course, our talented pupils and their families for creating such a memorable and uplifting evening. Well done to all performers for representing your houses with confidence, courage, and outstanding musicianship.
