Following the pupils’ growing curiosity about their favourite four-legged friends, Truro School Prep Reception pupils have been exploring the subject, ‘All About Dogs’, as a part of their topic-based learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
The children began by sharing photos and stories of their own family pets, confidently standing in front of the class to talk about what makes their dogs special. They asked and answered questions with great enthusiasm in what was a wonderful opportunity to develop confidence, communication skills, and curiosity.
As their learning deepened, the children discovered that dogs do many important jobs to help people. They learned about the police dogs, therapy dogs, and assistance dogs that support individuals with hearing or visual impairments. Pupils were lucky to meet Tayto, Truro School Prep’s much-loved therapy dog, and hear from Miss Pomery, who shared fascinating insights into her father’s police dog and the vital work they do together.
A particular highlight came as pupils welcomed some very special visitors into class from Cornwall Search Dogs, a local charity whose highly trained dogs help to locate missing people and animals across the county.
Handler Tracy and Vicki from Love Your Paws dog training (whose own dog is also a fully qualified search dog), introduced their dogs and talked about the important work they do to keep people safe. The children were captivated, asking thoughtful questions and delighting in seeing the dogs demonstrate some of their amazing skills.
Topic-based learning like this plays a vital role in the EYFS curriculum at Truro School Prep. It allows children to connect their interests and experiences with real-world learning, fostering curiosity, empathy, and a love of discovery across the curriculum.
The visit from Cornwall Search Dogs was the perfect way to bring this joyful topic to life in what was a day full of wagging tails, wide eyes, and wonderful learning for all. A huge thank you to Tracy and Vicki and their furry friends for making this magical session possible.
