As part of our Harvest Charity Week this year, we have been supporting the work of Newquay Foodbank (part of the Trussell Trust). Pupils and students from Nursery to Sixth have collected donations of food, nappies, toiletries and household essentials for the foodbank through their harvest chapel services.
A group of Year 6 House Captains and members of our Senior Community Action Team (CAT) headed to Newquay with our School Chaplain, Rev Helen and Mr Silk (Assistant Head (Pastoral) at Truro School Prep). Laden with minibuses filled with necessities, loaded by our Year 8 pupils, our representatives delivered these much-needed supplies to the foodbank. Here, pupils learnt first-hand from staff Zoe and Nicola why the foodbank is so vital to members of our community and the astounding impact that it has on people’s daily lives.
Pupils were invited to weigh what they had collected and to assist in stacking the shelves, ready for the next session on Friday, where the full 677kg of food and supplies donated will be available for the families and individuals who rely on the kindness of others for their weekly food supply. Newquay Foodbank currently assists six hundred households per week, with only 2% of their current supply coming from donations. They also provide a safe space and friendly conversation for members of our community who pop in for a tea and chat.
Supporting those in our local community is part of our Methodist Ethos, striving to be good global neighbours by following John Wesley’s example to do ‘“Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.”
The visit was a humbling and moving experience for all involved, and we would like to thank our school community for their generosity. If you would like to learn more about the foodbank, please visit Newquay Foodbank | Feeding Local People in Crisis.
