Exploring Nature at Trelissick

This week, our Truro School Prep’s Year 3 pupils set out on an autumnal adventure to Roundwood Quay, Trelissick, where they explored the rich woodland habitat and discovered the incredible variety of trees, birds, animals, and insects that call it home.

Pupils carefully examined the leaves they collected along the trail, comparing them to their fact sheets to identify which trees they had come from. There was plenty of excitement spotting acorns and horse chestnuts scattered on the ground, while listening to birdsong and spotting wildlife in the surrounding trees.

Along the way, pupils learned about natural water systems and erosion as they observed the river winding through the woodland. They also explored how seeds are dispersed and how the ecosystem supports such a diverse range of wildlife and plant life.

The walk even took the group through a 2,000-year-old Iron Age fort, offering a glimpse into how people once lived and thrived on this historic land. The pupils spotted the remains of the fort, with its banks and ditches still visible in this historically significant setting.

Pupils learnt how the quay itself was used for trading, particularly for exporting copper and tin ore and, later, importing coal.  This area of the River Fal proved useful in World War II, with troops sent there to practise for the Normandy D-Day landings.

It was a wonderful day of learning in the great outdoors, making the most of our beautiful Cornish countryside and the fresh air and sunshine.

A big thank you to our dedicated teaching team for inspiring our pupils with such engaging and memorable lessons, and well done to our incredible pupils, who were a credit to our school.
