Dr Matthew Spring Speaks at the National Army Museum

Last week, Dr Matthew Spring, Head of History, was invited to speak at the National Army Museum in Chelsea, where he shared his expertise on the British Army’s role in the American War of Independence.

His talk explored the conflict at both tactical and operational levels, challenging long-standing myths about British military incompetence and rigidity against the American response.

Contrary to popular belief, he was able to demonstrate how the British Army actively adapted to the unfamiliar terrain and the evolving challenges posed by their American adversaries. His insights shed light on the army’s strategic flexibility and the valuable lessons it learned throughout the campaign.

Dr Spring completed his doctoral research on the British Army in the American War of Independence at Leeds University and is the author of With Zeal and With Bayonets Only: The British Army on Campaign in North America, 1775–1783, a definitive work on the subject. The book is available in the school library for those interested in learning more.
