As part of the Geology and Geoscience programme for Sixth Formers, Old Truronians Dr Hannah Hughes CO06, Eva Marquis CO11 and Steve Holley CO06 delivered a Royal Institution–style interactive presentation covering Geology, Geoscience, and the Mining Value Chain, including Mining Engineering, Minerals Processing/Minerals Engineering, and Environmental Geoscience. The talk explored why these subjects matter, what makes them exciting and they discussed a range of associated career paths and higher education opportunities.
Hannah is Associate Professor in Exploration and Mining Geology at the Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter. She is the Programme Director for the undergraduate Geology degrees. Her research focusses on nickel, cobalt and the platinum-group elements in various magmatic and ore deposit settings. She holds a PhD from Cardiff University.
Eva is currently based at the Camborne School of Mines as a Research Fellow within the UKRI funded Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centre for Technology Metals (Met4Tech). Her research currently focuses on how Circular Economy principles can be integrated within exploration and mining projects.
Steve is Technical Services Manager at Cornish Metals, working on supporting both the feasibility study and dewatering/re-access projects. Before this he worked as a Mining Engineer at Paterson & Cooke, and as Associate Director at Wardell Armstrong. He studied at Camborne School of Mines and then worked in Western Australia before moving back to the UK.
