Deutsche Weihnacht in der Küche

It has been eine deutsche Weihnacht in der Küche, or a German Christmas in the kitchen at Truro School, as pupils have been cooking up delicious treats synonymous with the festive season in Germany.

Our Year 7 and Year 9 pupils have been busy at home baking Weihnachtsplätzchen, traditional German Christmas cookies, which they later carefully decorated in school.

In Truro School Cookery, pupils have also baked festive Apfelstrudel. Ahead of the practical work, they learned key baking vocabulary and practised strategies for understanding texts with unfamiliar words, matching German instructions to their English translations. During the baking sessions, they applied their German vocabulary while also being taught basic knife skills, and essential kitchen safety and hygiene.

The classes responded brilliantly to the challenge of learning new skills, and we have been thoroughly impressed by their collaboration, enthusiasm, and focus.
