Delving into the world of finance and asset management

Sixth Form pupils have been delving into the world of finance and asset management with a talk from Julia Ward, delivered in the Burrell Theatre as part of PSHE and Economics studies.

During the session, students engaged in the presentation before moving into breakout rooms to work through real-life scenarios under Julia’s guidance. Topics included investments, budgets, adult responsibilities, and the balance between spending and saving. With 17 years’ experience in the financial sector, Julia now runs her own firm, Conscious Wealth, which forms part of the St James’s Place portfolio.

As students approach a time of change, with increasing financial responsibilities and the prospect of entering higher education and the workplace, Julia advised the importance of starting early. She highlighted that consistency matters more than scale, encouraging students to begin small rather than delaying larger investments until later in life. Using graphs and case studies, she demonstrated how investments can grow over time and introduced students to a range of saving and investment options, including workplace, private and state pensions, ISAs, bonds, shares and property.

Julia also reminded students that one of their greatest assets at this stage of life is time. She encouraged them to reflect on their spending habits, particularly in a climate where social media can drive high-consumption lifestyles, and to take a conscious pause before deciding whether a purchase represents good long-term value.

To support those less familiar with financial terminology, Julia explained key concepts such as inflation and its impact, compounding, capital gains tax, market trends, tariffs and the importance of diversification within an investment portfolio.

Julia encouraged girls within the group to consider a role in finance, noting that while 18% of financial advisors are currently female, 60% of the UK’s wealth is controlled by women.

Thank you to Julia for such an empowering and informative session, which will undoubtedly support our students as they move towards earning, managing student finance and becoming financially independent.

Three students involved in the presentation group are currently studying A-Level Economics and hope to pursue careers in the field. Poppy, who has received two confirmed university offers to study Business Management, also studies RE and Geography and is training as an ACHE Mentor. During her time in the Sixth Form, she has completed two work placements with Conways Solicitors and Harbour Holidays, gaining valuable business experience.

Rory, who studies Maths, Biology and Economics, has found it beneficial to pursue a broad academic programme before committing to an Economics degree. He currently holds three university offers and is awaiting responses from two further institutions.

Sam is also aiming to study economics and finance, with aspirations for a career in the financial sector. He has embraced a wide range of Sixth Form opportunities, including representing the football team, completing the ACHE Mentorship, undertaking an EPQ, and studying Maths, Economics and Chemistry.
