An Ode to Tennis, on the Terrace

Just before the summer, our Gardening team completed the long-anticipated Celebration Garden. As part of this transformation, we have introduced two vintage-style tennis umpire chairs. These charming additions serve as a nostalgic tribute to the days when the Terrace was regularly used for tennis matches, offering a subtle nod to the school’s rich history.

To enhance the already colourful and fragrant collection of roses in the Celebration Garden, the team have planted an additional variety: Madame Alfred Carrière. This elegant climbing rose, with its large, creamy white, cupped blooms, adds a graceful vertical element and a timeless beauty to the space.

Truro School is steeped in over 140 years of history and our gardens are a treasured reflection of our School’s values, traditions, and our place in Truro’s community. We hope that you enjoy the photos below, showing the Terrace’s life as a tennis court, through to today’s tribute garden.

The Celebration Garden has been designed as a space for reflection or commemoration. The Truro School Foundation invites parents, Old Truronians, and friends of the school to order a commemorative plaque, which will be placed against one of the roses in the garden.

Each plaque can be printed with a personalised message and provides a lovely way to celebrate a birthday, wedding or anniversary, honour a milestone, or remember someone special.

In addition, your plaque donation will help the Foundation to provide means-tested bursaries to pupils. This support can be truly transformative to these young people, to their families and to the wider community. You can find out more about the Celebration Garden by following the link below.
