We commemorated the 80th anniversary of a remarkable moment in our shared history. At 3pm, pupils were invited to gather in the Celebration Assembly to mark the moment when Big Ben struck the hour and Prime Minister Winston Churchill addressed the nation, announcing that the war in Europe had come to an end. In his words, “Long live the cause of freedom!”
The stories of our Old Truronian alumni who served in the cause of freedom during the Second World War remain alive in our archives and our community stories. Some of their names are inscribed on the walls of our Chapel; others are captured in the pages of our history.
During our reflection, Rev Helen read an excerpt from the Truronian Magazine, published in May 1945, which you can read in full here.
May we never forget. May we always be thankful. And on this day, may we remember to treasure our freedoms, defend them for others, and seek peace in our lives and in the world. In doing so, we honour those who have gone on to glory.
